VIPERS OBTAIN 107-102 VICTORY AGAINST THE SQUADRON

Edinburg, Texas (Nov. 29, 2022) – The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (6-3) earned a 107-102 victory against the Birmingham Squadron (4-6) on Monday afternoon at Bert Ogden Arena during the Vipers annual Kid’s Day game in front of a crowd of over 6,000 kids. 

The first quarter got off to a slow start as both teams struggled to get on the board. With eight minutes to go in the game the Squadron had a brief 9-4 lead over the Vipers. Both teams tried to pull away with the lead but at the end of the first the matchup was tied 20-20. 

With the nine minutes to go in the second the Vipers had a slight three-point lead over Birmingham. With 5:20 to go the Vipers led 40-36. As the quarter continued the Vipers lead extended and sent the game into halftime with a score of 54-48 in favor of the home team.

During the third quarter Birmingham picked up the pace of the game and had a 67-62 lead with 3:20 left to go in the quarter, but at 2:45 RGV came back and tied the matchup 67-67. At the end of the quarter the home team pulled away with a 75-73 advantage.

As the fourth quarter progressed both teams battled it out for a victory. With 8:48 to go Birmingham led 80-79 over RGV, but the Vipers turned things around and walked away with a 107-102 victory. 

Houston Rockets assignment TyTy Washington Jr. scored 20 points. Houston Rockets Two-Way player Trevor Hudgins hit 18 points followed by Cassius Stanley and Houston Rockets Two-Way player Darius Days with 12 points each. Louis King finished with 10 points.

Birmingham was led by James Kelly Sr. with a double-double 27 points and 16 rebounds. Kelan Martin posted 22 points. Zylan Cheatham put up 12 points and eight rebounds. Daeqwon Plowden scored 11 points. Both Javonte Smart and Kalob Ledoux finished the game with 10 points each. 

RGV will face off against the Austin Spurs on Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. at H-E-B Center at Cedar Park. Fans may view the game via ESPN+. For more information visit www.rgvipers.com.
