SAMUELS JR. CAREER-HIGH, HINTON'S TRIPLE-DOUBLE AND CULVER'S DOUBLE-DOUBLE LEAD VIPERS TO VICTORY
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Nov. 11, 2023) – The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (1-1), the NBA G League affiliate of the Houston Rockets, earned a 134-117 victory over the Memphis Hustle (1-1) on Saturday night at Landers Center.
Houston Rockets Two-Way player Jermaine Samuels Jr. obtained a career-high 38 points. Houston Rockets Two-Way player Nate Hinton obtained a triple-double with 12 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists. Jarrett Culver reached a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
RGV turned things around in the second game of the back-to-back series against the Memphis Hustle. With eight minutes on the clock the Vipers had a 14-6 lead over Memphis. RGV then extended its lead by as many as 11 points which set the score at 26-15 with less than six minutes to go in the quarter. Two minutes later the visiting team pulled away with a 13-point lead and a score of 30-17. RGV maintained its 13-point lead and sent the game into the second quarter with a score of 38-25.
The second quarter was a hot one for the Vipers as the team held a 20-point lead with 6:26 left on the clock and a score of 63-43. Memphis then managed to minimize the opponents lead to an 11-point differential which resulted in a score of 67-56 at the half.
In the third quarter the Vipers got off to a fiery start as the team extended its lead by 22 points with a score of 83-61 and less than nine minutes to go. However, Memphis picked up the pace and shortened the Vipers lead to 10 points and set the score at 104-94 at the end of the third.
With less than nine minutes to go in the fourth quarter Memphis trailed by 21 points and a score of 118-97. The Hustle then went on a 10-0 run and set the score at 118-107. Despite the effort of Memphis to catch up, the Vipers walked away with a 134-117 victory.
Houston Rockets assignment Cam Whitmore and Darius Days both finished the night with 25 points each. Matthew Mayer also scored in the double digits with 10 points.
Memphis Grizzlies Two-Way GG Jackson paved the way for the Hustle with 32 points followed by Matt Hurt with 25 points. Adonis Arms finished the night with 18 points. Timmy Allen obtained a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The action continues on Wednesday, Nov. 15 at 7:00 p.m. CST as the Vipers take on the Austin Spurs at H-E-B Center at Cedar Park. Fans can stream the game on ESPN+.
