EDINBURG, Texas (Feb. 1, 2020) – The Rio Grande Valley Vipers announced today that they have acquired power forward Jarell Martin in a three-way trade with the Stockton Kings and Windy City Bulls. The Vipers acquired Martin from the Kings and traded Jaron Blossomgame and the returning player rights of Jonathan Gibson and Kyle Davis to Windy City Bulls. The Bulls traded their 2020 NBA G League Draft 1st Round Pick via Fort Wayne and the returning player rights to Charles Cooke to the Kings.
Martin (6-10, 239 lbs.) was previously waived by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Prior to the Cavaliers, Martin played with the Orlando Magic in 42 games (one start) for a total of 327.9 minutes. He scored 115 points, 73 rebounds and 18 assists. Martin averaged 2.7 ppg., 1.7 rpg., 0.4 apg. and 7.8 minpg.
During the 2017-18 campaign, Martin played in 73 games (36 starts) last season with Memphis, averaging 7.7 ppg., 4.4 rpg. and 1.0 apg. in 22.7 minpg. He scored in double figures 23 times, including a career-high 20 points on Dec. 27 @ L.A. Lakers. Martin led (or tied) the Grizzlies in scoring once, in rebounding four times and in assists once. He pulled down 10+ rebounds five times, including a career-high 14 boards on Mar. 28 vs. Portland, and recorded two double-doubles. Martin also played and started in two games with the Memphis Hustle of the NBA G League, averaging 11.0 ppg., 5.5 rpg. and 1.0 apg. in 26.8 minpg.
Originally selected in the first round (25th overall) of the 2015 NBA Draft by Memphis, Martin has appeared in 184 career NBA regular season games (40 starts), mostly with the Grizzlies, averaging 5.4ppg. and 3.5 rpg. in 15.9 minpg. He has also played in 34 career games (27 starts) in the NBA G League with Iowa and Memphis, averaging 15.3 ppg., 6.9 rpg. and 1.0 apg. in 28.3 minpg.
During his college career at Louisiana State University, Martin played in 65 games (57 starts) during two seasons from 2013-15, averaging 13.7 ppg., 6.9 rpg. and 1.4 apg. in 30.7 minpg. As a sophomore (2014-15), he played 33 games (32 starts) with the Tigers, averaging 16.9 ppg., 9.2 rpg. and 1.8 apg. in 35.1 minpg. Martin was a consensus All-SEC First Team selection and led LSU to their first NCAA appearance since 2009.
Blossomgame (6-6, 220 lbs.) has been a key player for the Vipers offense this 2019-20 campaign taking on the center role on multiple occasions. He has averaged 15.4 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 27.2 minutes of action. Blossomgame has scored 20+ points 11 times while also scoring 10+ points 9 times. He has hit a double-double six times.
The Vipers will play today as they host South Bay Lakers with tip-off set at 7:30 p.m. CT.
