VIPERS ACQUIRE RETURNING PLAYER RIGHTS TO MARCUS DERRICKSON

EDINBURG, Texas (Sept. 30, 2022) – The Rio Grande Valley Vipers announced today that the Maine Celtics have agreed to trade the returning players rights to Marcus Derrickson and their second-round pick in the 2023 NBA G League Draft to the Vipers. In exchange, RGV has agreed to trade the returning player rights to Marvin Smith to the Celtics. This trade is not subject to a physical.

Derrickson (6-7, 271lbs.) most recently played with the Maine Celtics for five games during the 2021-22 season. He averaged 5.0 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 14.3 minutes.

The Power Forward spent the 2020-21 season overseas with Suwon KT Sonicboom of the South Korean KBL (Korean Basketball League). He played in nine games averaging 18.9 points, 10.2 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.8 steals in 34.5 minutes.

For the 2019-20 season, Derrickson played in 40 games (37 of which he started) for the College Park Skyhawks. The Virginia native averaged 27.8 minutes of playing time, 13.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists. In 2019 he saw playing time, in six games, with the Sacramento Kings during the NBA Summer League. He averaged 4.7 points and 3.0 rebounds.

In 2018 he made his G League debut with the Santa Cruz Warriors. The 26-year old appeared and started in 35 games averaging 12.9 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists in 27.2 minutes. Prior to that, he played in 11 games for the Golden State Warriors in which he averaged 4.2 points and 1.2 rebounds. During the 2018 NBA Summer League Derrickson saw playing time with the Golden State Warriors. In a total of eight games (five of which he started) he averaged 13.1 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.3 steals.

From 2015-18 Derrickson played three years at the collegiate level with the Georgetown Hoyas before declaring for the NBA Draft. He finished his collegiate career with 89 games played (73 of which he started) averaging 10.3 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 25.7 minutes of playing time.

Smith played in 27 games with the Vipers last season. He averaged 7.0 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 14.3 minutes of playing time.
